Laplace surface dynamics, revisited: satellites, exoplanets, and debris with distant, eccentric companions

چکیده

To date, studies of $\textit{Laplace Surface}$ dynamics have concerned themselves with test particle orbits fixed shape and orientation in the combined field an oblate central body (to which is bound) a distant, inclined, companion captured to quadrupolar order. While amply sufficient for satellites around planets on near-circular orbits, approximation fails capture essential dynamical features induced by wide binary (be it star, planet or black hole) fairly eccentric orbit. With similar such astronomical settings mind, we extend classical Laplace framework higher multipoles, map out backbone stationary now complexified broken axial symmetry. Eccentric inclined equilibria, had been presaged systems large enough mutual inclination, are here delineated over broad range mutually perturbations. We recover them particles hot Jupiter stellar binary, highlighting their relevance architecture multi-planet binaries. then deploy our machinery closer home, as consider secular Trans-Neptunian Objects (TNOs) presence putative ninth planet. show how generalized equilibria seed islands objects be sheltered around, within chaotic seas via Poincar$\'{e}$ sections, while beautiful interplay between Kozai-Lidov structures. An eminently tale revived exo-planetary 21st century!

Satellite dynamics on the Laplace surface

The orbital dynamics of most planetary satellites is governed by the quadrupole moment from the equatorial bulge of the host planet and the tidal field from the Sun. On the Laplace surface, the long-term orbital evolution driven by the combined effects of these forces is zero, so that orbits have a fixed orientation and shape. The “classical” Laplace surface is defined for circular orbits, and ...

Tidal friction in close - in satellites and exoplanets .

This report is a review of Darwin’s classical theory of bodily tides in which we present the analytical expressions for the orbital and rotational evolution of the bodies and for the energy dissipation rates due to their tidal interaction. General formulas are given which do not depend on any assumption linking the tidal lags to the frequencies of the corresponding tidal waves (except that equa...

A Search for Distant Satellites of NeptuneMichael

The recent discovery of two distant satellites of Uranus suggests that there could be similar bodies orbiting Neptune. Previous surveys for distant satellites of Neptune have had relatively bright magnitude limits (B J ' 20:5) and would have missed satellites with magnitudes and colours similar to the 2 recently discovered Uranian satellites (R 20:4 and R 21:9). We have searched for satellites ...
